Less and better packaging

We are already doing quite a lot when it comes to packaging, although of course there is always room for improvement. That is why we have drawn up our own prevention plan to reduce the environmental impact of our packaging and the amount of packaging per kilogram of packaged product.

For example, the use of a thinner plastic film for our 25 kg and 20 kg bags has resulted in a 14% reduction in plastic per bag, without compromising strength and quality. In addition, the wrapping of our product pallets is entirely computer controlled, allowing us to maximise the elasticity of the plastic and optimise the number of wraps per pallet. Thanks to this automated process and the use of a thinner film, we save 40% plastic annually when pallet wrapping.

We also believe in reusing packaging materials, which is why most DCM packaging is recyclable. In addition, our liquid fertiliser bottles and potting soil bags are made of at least 80% recycled materials.

Another initiative resulting from our packaging prevention plan is our spreader box for fertilisers and grass and flower seeds. We won both a Belux and a European Smurfit Kappa Award for this packaging! Whereas we used to pack our fertilisers and seeds in a plastic bag before putting them in a cardboard box, we launched an innovative spreader box instead. It is more convenient for the consumer and better for the environment, because:

  • No plastic bags are needed anymore; fertilisers and grass seeds can be spread directly from the box.

  • The cardboard used is FSC-certified.

  • Thanks to the smart, Lego-style design, the boxes are easy to transport.

Thanks to the spreader boxes, we save 3.7 tonnes of plastic every year!
