Football pitches are used intensively throughout the winter months. However, heavy rainfall can sometimes make this challenging. Efficient rainwater drainage is one of the most important requirements for maintaining a good natural grass pitch.

In addition to good subsurface drainage, the top layer must also provide sufficient drainage capacity to prevent puddling on the playing surface during periods of heavy rainfall.

For this reason, it is advisable to inspect the drainage system before winter.
Mechanical aeration (e.g. verti-drain) will improve the permeability of the top layer. It may also be recommended to lighten the top layer by slightly sanding it.
