How to apply PMV®-01?
Before starting the use of PMV®-01, a team of experts provides the customer with detailed information on sampling procedures and the vaccination process itself. During this meeting, all stages of the crop cycle are reviewed together with the grower to identify any critical points related to hygiene measures.
Tailored advice
Based on this information, the team of experts can then provide the grower with a tailored recommendations regarding hygiene measures. These measures contribute to optimal vaccination and can also help prevent a wide range of other infections.
Pre-vaccination sampling
The next step in the vaccination strategy is pre-vaccination sampling. The samples are taken no more than one week before planting. Sampling can be carried out either at the nursery or at the grower’s site, depending on the grower’s preference. The leaf samples are then sent to the Scientia Terrae VZW laboratory for molecular analysis. They are analysed to verify that plants are free from PepMV. Results are generally available within three working days after arrival at the laboratory. Tomato seedlings are grown with great care and are generally free from PepMV.
As soon as this is confirmed through sampling and analysis, the vaccination procedure can be started. If the samples do test positive for PepMV, further options will be discussed with the customer.
Vaccination
For optimal performance, vaccination is recommended as soon as possible after planting. The vaccination itself consists of a single spray application of 4 to 8 L of PMV®-01/ha diluted in 150 to 300L water at a pressure of 5 to 7 bar. To ensure optimal product performance, it is essential that the product temperature never exceeds 15 °C during application. After application, a crop treatment is recommended to facilitate rapid and effective entry of the vaccine into the plant. A rate of 4 L/ha is considered the standard dose for optimum efficacy and sufficiently rapid colonisation. Where there is a high risk of infection or a need for accelerated colonisation, the application rate may be increased up to a maximum of 8 L/ha.
The vaccine subsequently establishes itself within the plants. After an incubation period of 4 to 6 weeks, the crop is generally protected against PepMV damage throughout the growing season. During this period, the team of experts takes post-vaccination samples to confirm the successful establishment of the vaccine.
