Brabantse Golf and the challenge

Brabantse Golf is a well-established name in the Belgian golf community. Its golf course is intensively used and requires high turf quality, optimum playing speed and visual perfection. For Philippe Mallaerts, who has been active in the sector for 40 years and is closely involved with the company, the profession has changed profoundly over the years: "It has always been a very complex job, but when I started there were fewer regulations and the main priority was simply making sure the golf course looked good. Back then, almost anything was possible, and over the years we used products that are now completely banned. It was truly a process of discovery and learning by doing."

In the meantime, legislation has become stricter, climate change means more stress for the turfgrass and golfers expect a consistently high quality of play. As a result, the job of greenkeeper has become much more specialised: "Where high doses of nitrogen and pesticides used to be the norm, it is now all about preventive care, soil life, and plant resilience." Fertilization must be done carefully, not excessively, while enhancing the plant’s own resilience. It is a skill in itself to find the right balance and the ideal formula for this." And all of this has to take place in a context in which the course must remain optimally playable at all times. "In golf, maintenance and play go hand in hand. Mowing, sanding, and overseeding are daily tasks, and they must be carried out in such a way that the golfer notices nothing — or as little as possible. Maintaining this balance is absolutely crucial."

“We aim for consistent, stable turfgrass growth without sudden peaks. This makes our greens more resilient and faster, exactly what golfers expect.”

Why does Brabantse Golf choose DCM?

The switch to DCM was not an abrupt decision, but rather an evolution in thinking about fertilization and soil health. Philippe once started with generic fertilisers, but felt that a more sustainable and controlled approach was needed. "We used to apply large amounts of nitrogen, partly because the grass varieties at that time simply needed it. But that approach is no longer tenable. Now it's all about balance." The difference between chemical and organic fertilisers in terms of nutrient release also played a role: "With chemical fertilisers, the nutrients are released faster and especially when it rains a lot, you quickly get growth peaks. We really want to avoid that, because it increases the risk of fungal attack. Organic fertilisers have a much more gradual release – nutrients are released when the plant needs them."

In DCM, Philippe found a partner that shares his way of thinking. Not only because of their products, but also thanks to their knowledge, personal support and openness to feedback. The latter turned out to be crucial in a rapidly changing world. "We are one of the first golf courses to really start working with DCM. In the beginning, their range for sports fields was more focused on football, but together we tested and adjusted products until they worked perfectly for our turf." According to Philippe, what sets DCM apart is their integral vision of plant resilience and sustainability. Their products are largely sourced from circular residual flows and are produced locally. This fits in perfectly with the environmental objectives of Brabantse Golf. "DCM focuses on the short chain, uses residual flows and takes sustainability into account. That fits in nicely with our environmental policy and our Route 2030 project." Their expertise in biostimulants and organic fertilization was also a deciding factor. "You can tell that they don’t just put anything on the market. Every product is well thought out, tested and tailored to practice."

The experience with DCM

The collaboration with DCM started with the desire to fertilize differently: less nitrogen, fewer growth peaks, more control. That also meant learning, testing and adjusting. "In the beginning there was still quite a bit of doubt here: we have to scarify and remove thatch, so why should we apply organic matter to our top layer? But DCM was able to respond perfectly to this."

"There was no ready-made recipe yet. We carried out soil analyses and developed our own schedule based on that." Today, Brabantse Golf uses a combination of solid and liquid fertilisers, tailored to the season, weather and soil conditions. Progress has also been made in terms of working comfort for the greenkeeper. Less frequent applications, more effect with fewer products. "I don't want to carry around ten products every week. We now use a limited set that is easy to apply, with no unpleasant odours or sticky residue." The interaction with DCM is essential here. New grass species, weather changes or robotization? There is always consultation. "It's a real partnership. We give feedback and they take it into account in their product development. That's how progress is made."

Results with DCM

The results of the collaboration are evident. Philippe notes that using DCM products has stabilized grass growth and improved control over the ball’s playing speed. "We are also seeing significantly less damage from infestations, and when issues due arise, we’re able to respond much more quickly." The aesthetic aspect shouldn’t be underestimated either. Healthy, vibrant greens enhance the enjoyment of play and boost customer satisfaction. "Visually, the difference is striking. The turf simply looks great, and that plays a key role in the overall player experience." Finally, maintenance remains manageable: thanks to stable growth, less interventions are required. "DCM ensures that we can still deliver top quality with fewer people. This is an absolute necessity today, because finding suitable personal is always a huge challenge for this profession."

Recommendation and advice from Brabantse Golf

Philippe recommends other golf clubs to take a critical look at their current approach and consider the switch to organic and hybrid fertilisers. "Every golf course is unique, but the direction is clear: fewer phytoproducts, more focus on soil health." He emphasizes the importance of training, knowledge sharing and following a phased step-by-step plan. The switch does not have to be radical, but it must be well thought-out. "Start with good soil analyses and set clear goals. Then look for a supplier who thinks along with you, such as DCM." He encourages colleagues to visit other courses and exchange experiences. The strength lies in collaboration and sharing best practices. "It works for us. And if that inspires others, then that is only positive for the entire sector."
